Brits cut holiday cost with credit card rewards

3rd August 2010

More people in the UK are taking advantage of rewards from credit cards to reduce the cost of their summer holidays.

According to research released by The Starwood Preferred Guest credit card from American Express, 21 per cent of British travellers intend to use their credit card rewards for things such as free or discounted flights and hotel rooms.

The survey also revealed that the average Brit believes they could save up to £100 per year on their holidays if they redeemed their credit card rewards to help towards the cost.

With almost half of respondents stating that they spend more than £800 each year going on holidays or mini breaks, it could amount to a sizeable saving.

The Consumer Credit Counselling Service recently advised people to save up for a holiday rather than borrowing money to afford a break.

Media manager at the organisation Una Farrell noted that taking a holiday is an important part of many people's lives because it allows them to escape from daily stress and pressure.
