Microsoft unveils motion-tracking technology for Xbox 360

14th June 2010

Xbox 360

Gamers from around the world saw Microsoft unveil its latest innovation for the Xbox 360 this weekend.

The computing giant revealed that it has developed a motion-sensing unit for the Xbox 360, essentially allowing gamers to play without the use of a controller.

Called Kinect, the device plugs into Xbox 360 consoles and uses a camera, audio sensors and motion-sensing technology to track 48 points of movement on the human body.

Mike Delman, corporate vice-president of global marketing for the Interactive Entertainment Business, told a press conference in Los Angeles: "You are the controller. You simply step in front of the sensor and Kinect sees you move, hears your voice and recognises your face."

Microsoft pointed out that this means gamers will no longer need to remember different commands for a handheld controller.

Further information about Kinect is expected to be released later today (June 14th).

Although you may not be able to get your hands on the Kinect technology just yet, you could get ready for its release by entering online auctions for Xbox 360 consoles.

Penny auction sites such as Quick2bid give you the chance to win Xbox 360 consoles and games, for just a fraction of the recommended retail price.
