Nintendo Wii introduced for patients at Welsh care home

1st July 2010

One care home in Wales has brought in a modern games console to help keep its residents active.

The Adlington House care home on Abbey Road in Rhos-on-Sea has introduced a Nintendo Wii for its residents to play games on, the North Wales Weekly News reported.

And those living at the care home have been making use of games such as ten-pin bowling, tennis and darts.

One of the residents Denis Bromage, 86, told the newspaper that he enjoys playing on the Nintendo Wii console.

"I think it is lovely. I enjoy it. It is exercise both for the brain and the body," he said.

Mr Bromage also revealed that they are planning to set up competitions for two or three of the residents to take part in together.

In Scotland, NHS Lothian is trialling the use of the Nintendo Wii for elderly mental health patients in Herdmanflat Hospital.

Fiona Graham, head of occupational therapy for mental health in East Lothian, told the Scotsman that there is increasing evidence that playing games on the Nintendo Wii can help older people with "balance, flexibility and hand-eye coordination".

If you want to keep your mind and body active with a Nintendo Wii, then you could try and win one in an online auction.
