New music download service launched by HMV

26th July 2010

Entertainment retailer HMV has taken its first step into the world of downloadable music, by launching its own online music download site - hmvdigital.

The service is designed to be compatible with any MP3 player and has an online catalogue of more than ten million songs.

As part of its launch promotion, hmvdigital will be offering all the singles in the top 40 for just 40 pence.

The new service will also allow users to re-download tracks that they have paid for if they are lost, something not currently offered by rival site iTunes.

Head of music at HMV Melanie Armstrong commented that the company is offering "a world-class music download platform", adding that it is "a genuine alternative to all the other digital music services currently out there".

Last September, HMV bought a 50 per cent stake in 7digital, a company that specialises in digital services. It also powers Spotify, another digital downloads website.

This acquisition is said to have helped HMV develop its latest offering, which the retailer hopes will compete with Apple's iTunes site.

iTunes currently boasts a music library of more than 11 million tracks, with individual songs starting from 59 pence.
